Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide,
despite the constantly improving methods of diagnosis and treatment. Advances in the
diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors and, in particular, acute coronary
syndrome (ACS), have increased survival among patients with coronary heart disease,
turning it into a chronic disease, which, to date, affects 15.5 million patients in the United
States alone, and from which more than 538,000 people die annually.
